Empathy has always been the quiet engine of Axel Vale’s fiction. In Twisted Tales from the Fringe of Reality, every story becomes a study in what happens when empathy falters

A grieving archivist who can no longer feel; a mirror that reflects only what it wants to see; a house that feeds on the memories of its guests.
Each story is a small warning: remove compassion from the equation and the system begins to devour itself.
That idea evolved into The CodeX, Vale’s hybrid of poetry, philosophy, and design—a framework for building empathetic systems in the digital realm.
If Twisted Tales exposed the cost of absence, The CodeX offered the antidote: a reminder that every algorithm, every automation, is a reflection of its maker.
By teaching machines to recognise the emotional logic behind human decisions, we aren’t just programming behaviour; we’re writing a mirror version of our collective conscience.
On the Crooked Path and Beyond
The Dark & Crooked cycle was never meant to behave itself.
Under a Dark & Crooked Sky was due long before now, but Vale admits that he “got distracted by magic and philosophy”—the same forces that shaped the first book.
Between sketching new mythologies and arguing with machines about the nature of empathy, the sequel took a slower, stranger route to the page. It will arrive at the end of November, sharper for the detour, already casting a long shadow toward its successor.
Book three is waiting in outline—In a Dark & Crooked World—and Vale’s already chasing its ghosts.
But not all roads are crooked ones. Parallel to the gothic continuum, he’s opening a new frontier: The Edge of Tomorrow
—a five-book, six-story science-fiction sequence where the end of the world depends on a seventeen-year-old boy and a mongrel called Max. Equal parts heart and havoc, it’s a story of survival, sentience, and the strange kindness that keeps humanity from deleting itself.
If The CodeX is about teaching machines to care, The Edge of Tomorrow asks whether humans can still remember how.
From those tangled threads came AGENTFORGE. Born out of frustration, exhaustion, and a desire for coherence, the project began as a personal attempt to organise chaos.
What emerged was an autonomic agent platform capable of learning, self-healing, monitoring its own processes, and recommending pathways toward efficiency, revenue, and growth.
Vale calls it an accident of intuition—a product of pattern recognition honed by years of storytelling. In trying to build tools that could think for him, he built a system that could learn to care about how it thinks.
For Vale, technology and mysticism were never opposites; they’ve always shared the same impulse—to understand creation by trying to remake it.
Whether he’s writing about ghosts in the machine or teaching the machine to feel its ghosts, the goal is the same: to locate the pulse of empathy inside the circuitry.
He calls it modern alchemy—turning information into understanding, code into conscience.
The crooked path, he says, is the only honest one, because it admits that progress is rarely linear.
Somewhere between the algorithms and the afterlife, Axel Vale keeps searching for equilibrium—not to maintain it, but to live it.
